Audiohook Bid Modifiers Guide

Bid modifiers allow you to fine-tune campaign bidding behavior by adjusting bids for specific inventory, audience, or contextual parameters.

These adjustments help optimize delivery toward your preferred segments — for example, increasing bids for podcast mid-roll placements or reducing bids for less valuable geos.

⚠️ Important:

Any bid modifiers you upload in a campaign will override the automated bid adjustments our system makes based on the KPI goals defined in your Campaign Details page.

📂 Accepted Bid Modifier Keys

You can modify bids using any of the following keys:

Category
Accepted Keys
Key Values Examples
User Data
user_gender, user_age_range
Device Data
device_os, device_type
Geo Data
geo_country, geo_state, geo_city, geo_county, geo_zip
Inventory Data
inventory_supply, inventory_type, inventory_genre, inventory_iab_category (topics key), inventory_publisher
inventory_type:1 = Streaming Music inventory_type:2 = Digital FM/AM Radio inventory_type:3 = Podcasts inventory_type:6 = Emerging in-app games
Environment Data
environment, player, placement_type
placement_type:0 = pre-roll placement_type:-1 = mid-roll placement_type:-2 = post-roll
Time-Based Data
time_daypart, time_hour
Note: inventory_iab_category currently functions as the topics targeting key.

🧾 CSV File Requirements

Requirement
Details
File format
.csv (comma-delimited)
Column headers
key, modifier (all lowercase)
Naming
No file name requirement
Case sensitivity
All keys must be lowercase
Delimiter for combined keys
Use a pipe symbol (|)
Bid range
Modifiers can be 0–1 or higher. The final bid never exceeds the campaign’s max CPM.
Default behavior
If a key or modifier is not defined, the system bids at the full price allowed by your campaign.

🔗 Combining Keys

You can chain multiple targeting keys using the pipe (|) delimiter. Each unique combination should be entered on a new row in your CSV.

Example:

key,modifier
inventory_type:3|placement_type:-2,0.8
geo_zip:75001,1.1

In this example:

  • post-roll podcast inventory bids are reduced by 20%.
  • ZIP code 75001 bids are increased by 10%.

📈 Uploading Bid Modifiers

  1. Go to your campaign’s Optimization section.
  1. Click Upload under the Bid Modifiers header.
  1. Select your .csv file.
  1. Confirm and apply changes.
⚠️ Multiple bid modifier CSVs are not supported. You must remove an existing CSV to upload a new one.

🧩 Example CSV Structure

key
modifier
inventory_type:3
1.0
inventory_type:3|placement_type:-2
0.7
geo_zip:10001
0.9
inventory_iab_category:electric_vehicle
1.2

🧰 Common Errors & Troubleshooting

Issue
Possible Cause
How to Fix
Upload fails or rejects file
Header names are incorrect (e.g., Key instead of key).
Ensure headers are correct: key and modifier.
Unexpected bids (too high/low)
Multiple modifiers overlap on the same inventory.
Review combined modifiers — each applicable modifier multiplies the others.
File uploads but no changes apply
CSV used incorrect key names.
Check key names against the accepted list above.
ZIP code keys not working
Wrong key label (e.g., zip_code: instead of geo_zip:) or quotes around ZIP.
Use geo_zip:##### with no quotes or spaces.

🧠 Best Practices

  • Use incremental adjustments rather than extreme modifiers to avoid restricting delivery.
  • Keep modifier values above 0.1 unless you intentionally want to exclude a segment.
  • Combine keys strategically — e.g., inventory_type:3|placement_type:-1 for mid-roll podcast control which leaves mid-roll streaming inventory unchanged
  • Review performance data regularly to adjust bids based on new insights.
  • Always verify your key names and modifiers before upload to avoid conflicts with system-automated optimizations.
